Sweet woodruff - also known as sweetscented bedstraw - is a pretty, low growing plant with a characteristic sweet fragrance. It grows in woods and other moist, shady places and spreads rapidly making an ideal ground cover.
It's one of the first plants to bloom in spring.
The leaves are bright green and arranged in starlike whorls around the erect, slender and square stems.
The plant has small clusters of chalk white flowers.
Here in Denmark, sweet woodruff is very common throughout the country, except in north and west Jutland (Jylland), where it's rarely found.
It grows in moist humus-rich soil in beech woods, oak woods, and shrubs.
